  10. Tips for Engaging Effectively

1. First: Set Up Your Study ID and Name

Your very first task, before any preparation or practice. It takes about a minute and you only do it once on this device.

Use the same browser on the same device each time. Your session transcripts, plans, reflections and results are saved to the research database under your study ID, but your progress through the modules is kept in that browser, so switching browsers or clearing your browsing data will reset where you are.

2. Before You Start: Complete Your Preparation

Each module begins with a Preparation step. Before you connect to Daniel, take time to:

You don't pay for streaming time during this exploration, the avatar isn't activated until you connect. Take as long as you need to prepare.

3. Starting Your Session

Click the big ๐ŸŽ™ Connect to Daniel button. This:

The static photo is replaced by a live, animated avatar. You're now in session.

4. Voice Mode vs. Text Mode

At the top of the avatar column you'll see two buttons: ๐ŸŽ™ Voice and ๐Ÿ“ Text. You can switch any time during the session.

Voice Mode (default)

Text Mode

When to use which: Voice mode trains you in real-time conversation rhythms and emotional pacing. Text mode is useful when you're in a shared space without headphones, want to slow down and craft your responses, or are deaf/hard of hearing without access to good speakers.

5. How to Talk With Daniel

Hands-Free Voice Mode

  1. Click the large microphone button below the avatar
  2. Status changes to "Mic ON, keep talking, or pause to send automatically"
  3. Speak naturally as if you were talking to a real client
  4. When you finish a thought, pause for ~2 seconds. Your message auto-sends
  5. The mic turns off. The client responds
  6. Click the mic again when you're ready to speak the next message

The mic does not auto-resume after the client finishes. That's intentional, so the client's voice (or any background noise) doesn't accidentally trigger a new message from you.

Text Mode Typing

  1. Type into the textarea below the avatar
  2. Press Enter to send (or Shift+Enter for a new line)
  3. The client responds with text in the caption bar (and audio if you switch back to voice mode)

6. Captions and Accessibility

Captions appear in the dark blue bar directly under the avatar's video stream. Whatever the client says aloud is also written there in real time.

This was a deliberate accessibility design choice. Every word the client says is available as text, every time.

8. Pausing, Resuming, and Ending

โธ Pause

Click the gray Pause button in the header. The avatar freezes, audio mutes, the timer stops, and the mic turns off. The streaming session stays connected so you can resume instantly. Useful for short breaks. Note: you are still being charged for streaming time during a soft pause.

โ–ถ Resume

Click the green Resume button (replaces Pause when paused) to restart the session. The avatar unfreezes, timer continues, mic available again.

๐Ÿšช End Session

Click the red End Session button in the header when the conversation is complete. This:

9. After the Session: Self-check, Debrief & Reflect

When you use a session and continue, you take a short Self-check: a few vignette questions with instant explanations.

Then comes Debrief & Reflect, in two parts. In part 1 you connect to Dr. Hayes, your AI Instructional Coach, who has read your session and talks it through with you. In part 2 you write a short reflection in your own words. After you submit, you see your rubric scores and can download your work for your course.

10. Tips for Engaging Effectively

Be authentic.Treat the simulation as if it were a real client. The system rewards genuine engagement, and the feedback only reflects what you actually did.
Follow client cues.If they mention sleep, ask more about sleep. If they say something flat, sit with the silence. Don't power through your assessment checklist.
Use open-ended questions."What brings you in today?" rather than "Are you depressed?"
Honor reluctance.Real veteran clients are often guarded. Validate before pushing for content. "It makes sense you weren't sure about this" opens more than any assessment tool.
Mind cultural identity.Ask about military experience as something that mattered, not just as background. Acknowledge what you don't know firsthand.
Don't skip means access. If risk emerges, you must ask about firearms. Calmly. Directly. Without apologizing.
One thing to remember: There is no "right path" through a session. The simulation responds to what you actually do. Each session can go differently. The learning is in the iteration.
